☆ 中国文化紹介その２：迷信・民間信仰 ―――――― 2005/05/18
ーー迷信・民間信仰についてのプレゼンテーションもあった。
その中で新たに知ったことは、６と８がどうしてラッキーナンバーで、４と７
が不吉なのかということ。
――日本では、八は「末広がり」だから縁起が良いとされ、４は「死」と同音
だから不吉。
――中国では、６はすべてが順調にいく「流 liu」と発音が同じ。８（広東語
で発 fa 財と同音）＝お金がたまる。
７「棄 qi」＝なくなる、と同じ意味らしい。
私の誕生日は９月９日―重陽の節句だが「老人の日」と呼ばれている。
ーー９の発音は「久 Jiu」と同じ、すなわち不滅・長生きを意味する。
「老人の日」生まれだなんて嫌だなと思っていたが、９は中国ではオールマイ
ティ、最強の数字らしい。嬉しい！
白は、日本では花嫁衣裳など純粋を意味するいい色だが、中国では不吉な色。
お葬式で、親族は白を纏うそうだ。女性は白い髪飾りをつけてはいけないのだ
と生徒が言っていた。
また、プレゼントとしてあげてはならないものは時計（中国字： ＝日本字：
鐘）「終 zhong」と同音なので、特に病人のお見舞いには不適当。友人に贈る
と、これでお付き合いは終りね！というメッセージを伝えることになる。
日本では、病院に見舞いに行くとき、鉢植えの花＝根がつく＝寝付く、椿の切
花＝花がボタッと落ちるので、持参しないようにする風習がある。上海語では
りんご(苹果)の発音が「病故 Pinguo 」と同じで、病人には絶対あげてはなら
ないそうだ。
中国人の先生が、「最近、左目がピクピクして困る。良くないな。」と言って
いたので訊いてみると「右目ならお金が舞い込む印、でも左目は災難が来るか
ら」という話だった。
中国では、大晦日まで皆忙しく働き、新年を迎える準備をするが、元旦は特に
掃除は絶対してはいけないという。ゴミも出さないで溜め込む。すなわちお金
がたまるという暗示だ。
また、今年は「寡婦年」というそうだ。立春(今年は２月４日)が春節の前に来
てしまうので縁起が悪い。結婚すると未亡人になってしまう！ということで、
去年の暮れには駆け込み結婚式が多かったとか。

「迷信は、やたらに怖がったり避けたりせずに、うまく利用して暮らしに取り
入れよう。災いを除いて自信と安心感を得ることができる。」と生徒の一人が
締めくくった。
中国の人たちが、いかにうまく昔からの言い伝えから知恵を得ているかを理解
することができた。ただし、納得できるような理由のないものも多々ある。

―― Chinese Culture No.2 Superstitions/Popular Beliefs ――
In China, 6, 8and 9 are considered lucky numbers, since
their homophones have auspicious meanings. 6 pronounced
'Liu' in Chinese, implies that everything will go
smoothly. 8 reads as 'Fa' in Cantonese, which means to
make a great fortune in the near future. The letter nine,
pronounced as 'Jiu', implies longevity and everlasting, in
friendship, marriage, which is probably the best number in
China. Thus, numbers ending with these three digits are
preferred for example, when it comes to choosing phone
numbers, car license plates and room numbers. 4 and 7 are
unlucky numbers people will avoid because the former
implies death and the latter means gone.
Red symbolizes prosperity and is considered a lucky color.
White, on the other hand, is an unlucky color. Women
should not wear white ornaments in their hair. At
funerals, bereaved family usually wears white clothes.
There are other miscellaneous beliefs. When a left eye
wiggles, money comes in and right eye wiggles, trouble
comes in.
Don’t give a clock as a birthday gift, because its sound
is the same as END-death. ([鐘] zhong 終)
In Shanghai, it is not auspicious to give a patient some
apples, because in Shanghai dialect, apple sounds the same
as sick and accident. (苹果 pingguo 病故)
New Year Day’s taboo- Don’t clean the house, cook, use
needles and knives, dump garbage, eat porridge for
breakfast. If you start doing housework on the beginning
of the new year, you will be deemed to work that way the
whole year round. Cooking involves fire and knife, which
symbolize a house on fire and getting cuts. If you do some
needlework, watch out ! Needles imply serious quarrels
within families. Storing garbage during Spring Festival
means you will save a fortune throughout the year.
When the vernal equinox day comes before Spring Festival,
women should not get married. If they did, they would be
widowed. This year 2005 is considered to be such a year,
thus by the end of 2004, many couples rushed to get
married.
One student made a suggestion. “Let’s make good use of
these superstitions instead of just fearing or avoiding
taboos. Then we will gain confidence and a sense of
security.
” I understand how Chinese people get wisdom from these
beliefs and put into practice every day. However, I still
have many questions unanswered or answers without
convincing reasons.
