☆ 中国の大学生、就職難 ――――――――――――― 2004/12/08
もう１２月になった。年中行事の入った来年のカレンダーが欲しい。
中国では、旧暦使用のため毎年変化がある。特に春節がいつなのかを知りたい
と思う。来年は２月９日だそうだ。今年は１月２２日だったから、１８日間の
ズレ。学校の始業も終業もそれに合わせてある。
本科の四年生と専科の三年生は、来年６月の卒業をひかえ、就職活動に躍起に
なっている。中国の今年度の卒業生は２８０万人、年々増える傾向にあるそう
だ。就職難、もはや学士様！と、もてはやされる時代ではなくなったらしい。
英語科の生徒には、履歴書の書き方を指導している。文法的には正しくとも、
英語圏の人が読むとぎこちなく思われる。何故なのか。中国語からの翻訳をす
るためだ。英語の発想と書き方は、直線型、中国語や日本語は円形だ。
つまり、中国語や日本語は、季節の挨拶や相手へのねぎらいの言葉から始まっ
て、結論になかなか達しない。一方英語では、要点をまず言って自分の意思を
伝え、相手に何をしてもらいたいかを率直に書くのだ。
中国語でまず見本を作って、それを英語に翻訳すると、まわりくどくなってし
まって何を言いたいのか全くわからなくなってしまう。
私が履歴書を英文で作成したのはオーストラリア滞在中。日本の履歴書の形式
をまねて作ってみたら、一からやり直すように言われてしまった。もちろん履
歴書の提出先も問題になってくる。一体誰が読むのか。日本に住む欧米人か、
現地の欧米人か、学校英語しか知らない日本人か、英語圏に住んだ体験のある
日本人か、、
日本人で母国語が英語でない私が、中国の学生にアドバイスできるのはこの点
だ。アジア圏の言語は曖昧表現をするのが当たり前、でも英語圏の人には理解
してもらえない。中国語で履歴書を作るならそれはそれでＯＫだが、英語の場
合は発想を変えて、もっと論理的に、単刀直入に。
こうやって全く発想の違う二種類を作成して提出すれば評価が上がるだろう。
国際感覚に優れた学生も中にはいるが、大多数が中国で就職することになる。
しかも、地元南通ではなく、ふるさとに帰って。激しい競争、そして少しでも
優位に立つため、大学院入試を受けたり、ＴＯＥＦＬやＩＥＬＴＳなどの国際
的に認められている英語能力試験を試してみる生徒もいる。留学は叶わない夢
でも、自分の実力を証明する基準にはなる。
「ChinaDaily」によると、公務員志望の大学生が、８４００人の求人に対して
何と３１万人以上いる。３７人に１人という競争率だ。社会福利が多いこと、
社会的な評価が高いこと、プレッシャーが少なく、安定しているというのがそ
の理由だ。
高学歴の人間が満足できる職業とはいったい何なのか考えさせられる現象だ。
中国の貧富の格差は大きい。富裕に属する人たちは皆、高学歴なのだろうか。
マイクロソフト社のビルゲイツのように、在学中から企業家をめざしてビジネ
スを始める人はいないのか。
一方で、中国には農村部を中心に貧困層が厚い。人口の７割が農民だ。そして
１億人以上が高収入の道を求めて出稼ぎ農民(工農)となり都市部に流れ込む。
しかし雇い主からの給料の無配や遅配、子供の就学の差別、社会制度の不備に
より、挫折する人が多いと聞いている。
私の存在をふと考えてみる。日本に職はない。まず年齢で切られる。修士号を
持っていても使い道がない。年齢にあった求人欄を見ると、清掃員、警備員、
スーパーのレジ、コンビニのパートさん。保険の勧誘。
教職でみると、進学塾や予備校は若い男の先生を優先的に雇用している。中学
高校は、産休の先生の代理要員として空きが出る程度。
大学の講師なんてとんでもない。ほとんどがその大学の卒業生で、教授の引き
があって入り込み、派閥が出来上がっている。さらに、募集があるのは科学技
術・医学・薬学・コンピューターサイエンスなど、私とは無縁のものばかり。
私に適しているのはＥＳＬ／ＥＦＬ（英語を母国語としない外国人に英語を教
える仕事）なのだが、インターネットで探すと中国には山ほどあるのに、日本
には数えるほどしかない。それもほとんどネイティブの求人だ。まだまだ日本
では英語はネイティブに習うのが一番いい、という信仰を持つ人が多い証拠。
以前鍼灸院に履歴書を持っていったことがある。心身症をわずらい通院してい
た頃だ。先生とは同い年で、会話もはずんでいた。パートさん募集、資格問わ
ず。との求人広告を出されたので「じゃあ、私でもいいかな」と思ったのだ。
先生は、履歴書を読むなり、「気持ちはわかるけれど、全く医学と関係のない
職歴だからダメ」と言われてしまった。教職も医学も、人間相手だから共通点
はあると思うのだけれど、、英語に関する資格を書き並べた履歴書は、付き返
されてしまった。
ーー「やはり英語を使った仕事を探すべきだよ」というアドバイスとともに。
現在の私、仕事的には恵まれている。中国の、しかも大学で教鞭をとれるなん
て。でも、日本に残した家族が気がかりだ。何か起こってもすぐ帰るわけには
いかない。学生に履歴書の書き方を指導しながら、自分もこれからの人生設計
を見直している。

Job-hunting season
This is the time for buying a new calendar.
As China has adopted a lunar calendar system, Chun Jie (Spring
Festival) for instance, varies every year.
Next year it falls on February 9, and school opening and closing date
modifies accordingly.
Seniors are busy hunting for jobs right now.
More than 2.8million will graduate from college in China.
Finding a satisfactory job seems increasingly difficult.
B.A. holders are no longer privileged citizens.
I am teaching how to write a c.v.(resume) in English.
Although their English is grammatically correct, it looks awkward
when English native speakers read it.
Why? It is attributed to the different way of thinking in Asia and
the West.
English is linier and Chinese/Japanese are circular.
In other words, Asian language starts with seasonal greetings and
personal messages to the reader, whereas English states the main
point first.
When students translate their Chinese resume into English ones, the
results are obvious.
In Australia, I was advised not to translate from Japanese to English.
I had to write more logically and straightforwardly.
Of course, it is important to know who the reader will be.
(if he/she is a native English speaker or a Japanese)
I can advise my students to write their resume according to their
traditional model in Chinese, and completely different and innovative
one in English.
Then they can draw special attention from the reader.
A few students want to sit for graduate school exam, TOEFL or IELTS
(internationally recognized English proficiency test).
Though going abroad to study is merely a dream, they can prove their
English ability during this job-hunting season.
According to China Daily (English newspaper), 310,000 college
graduates sit for the 8,400 posts of civil servants nationwide.
One out of 37 will be hired. What a competition!
Is it true that the civil service is stable with less pressure,
higher perks and welfare?
What sort of professions can satisfy highly educated people?
Have wealthy people in China all received higher education?
Is there any entrepreneur like Gill Gates who started a business
while still in college?
Meanwhile, China has a lot of impoverished people especially in rural
areas.
70 % of the population is said to be farmers in this country.
100million of them leave their villages for cities looking for jobs.
They encounter serious problems such as delay or no wages from their
employers, discrimination in children’s education and lack of social
security.
This is the time when I reflect upon my own career and future.
Teaching English, which I consider my calling, is satisfactory and
rewarding.
However, living in a foreign country without a family causes lots of
worries.
I used to work in Japan as an English teacher.
However, the job market in Japan is currently youth-centred.
Age discrimination comes atop.
At my age, job opportunities are limited such as cleaners,
supermarket clerks, security guards and insurance salespersons.
In a teaching field, middle schools have only a few openings due to
the maternity leave teachers.
Prep and cram schools hire predominantly young male teachers who have
greater energy and ambition to guide pupils.
Universities are notorious for sectionalism or faction favouritism.
As I have no connection to a particular professor or college, chances
are slim getting a job there.
In addition, IT related subjects, science and research, medicine are
on high demand.
What is suitable for me is the EFL/ESL teaching job, which is
abundant in China not in Japan.
Due to the myth that only native English speakers teach English well,
most ESL jobs go to the people from North America, UK, Australia and
New Zealand.
Long ago while I was suffering from psychosomatic illness, I often
visited an acupuncturist.
He was my age and very friendly to me.
Once he posted an add seeking for an assistant at his clinic.
I applied for it thinking that a job in a different field would be a
beneficial experience.
After reading my c.v. with a long list of English qualifications and
work experiences, he politely declined saying that I would be most
suited for English teaching position not in a medical field.
I feel my current university is a place for self-realization.
China has offered me this rare opportunity.
However, I worry a lot about my family living in Japan.
I cannot return immediately when something unexpected happens.
While giving instructions on how to write a resume, I myself rethink
what I have done and can do in future.

┌──────────「気分は情報無限さん」
いずれの国の学生も悩みは同じという事なんですかね。
「実力社会」とかいわれているアメリカからして一番の学歴社会らしく、高卒
より大卒が有利、そして大卒より大学院卒の修士、更には論文をパスして博士
号を持っている人のほうが決定的に生涯賃金が上なんだそうです。
今の大陸中国のような発展途上の国の場合、「学校」は大量に作れますが、高
学歴を生かせる職場は簡単には出来ませんから厄介だと思います。
日本の英語教育に関して、初心者には日本人の先生のほうが好ましいと聞いた
ことがありますが、それを実践している英会話学校は今のところないみたいで
す。
社会科学者の小室直樹先生の本で読みましたが、日本で「法律上」とか「教育
上」というと「実体を伴わない」との代名詞になるそうですから無理もないの
かも知れません。
何だか中途半端な雑学知識を羅列してしまいました。
どうも私には文才がないみたいですね・・・。

日本はウチとソトの社会。ヨソ者には冷たい社会だと思います。外国人が自分
の文化、価値観を保ったまま日本社会で暮らすことは許されません。英語教師
として赴任する外国人は多いですが、皆ほとんど短期間です。お金を稼いで、
先生！先生！とあがめられ、いい思いをして帰国しています。
ゲストワーカーというのでしょうか。お客さんである限りは、快適な暮らしが
できます。日本社会はこういう人たちが長期にわたって、或いは永住すること
を望んではいません。
中国で生活している私は、教師である限りある程度お金が稼げます。日本では
こうはいきません。英語教育にどこか問題点があるのか、管理社会だからか、
わかりません。
中国はすさまじい競争社会です。そして学歴重視。外国人崇拝もあります。
日本人であることに私はあまり誇りを持っていませんが、教師でよかったな、
とは思います。
