☆ 異文化コミュニケーションのクラスで ―――――― 2004/11/03
個性的な生徒、そして国際的な感覚に富む生徒。授業態度もとても積極的、且
つ自発的、いろんな意見が飛び出す。シャイな生徒も、書かせるとしっかりし
た意見を書いてくる。
ロサンゼルスタイムズの記事から、「非文明的な行為をなくそう」というもの
を読ませた。
自国の恥ずべき行為――痰吐き、ごみのポイ捨て、割り込みに対して、しっか
りと認識している。そして、そういう行為を正していくためにどうすればいい
のかをきちんと考え提案している。一方で、自国を擁護するように、これらの
行為がどうして蔓延しているのか、その原因も説明している。
こういう生徒には、私は二重丸をつける。
クエスチョンマークをつけたいのは、言い訳、弁解ばかりで、事実を認めよう
としない生徒だ。自分の国、国民が、外国からどう見られているのか、もっと
敏感になってほしいと思う。
日本は「恥の文化」だとよく言われる。
日本人は自意識過剰で、常に周りの目を意識している「謙虚は美徳」として、
自分の非を認めすぐ正そうとするが、自信に欠ける。愛国心も薄いように思わ
れる。一方中国人は、誇り高き国民で、愛国心が強い。
わかったこと。まず原因について、
１．中国が大きい国で、情報や教育が隅々までいきわたらないこと。
２．中国は発展途上国で、まだ貧困層が多いということ。
３．政府の目標とするのは第一に経済発展、そのために倫理や公衆道徳は後回
しにされてきたこと。
４．特に農村の家庭では、教育を受けられない子供が多い。
５．家庭で公衆道徳を教えない。親にも認識がない。
６．問題が山積みで、解決に時間とお金がかかること
７．物質的満足を求め過ぎて、伝統的なよい習慣が忘れられ自己中心になって
いる人が増えていること
そして対策について、生徒が私に訴えていることは、
１．政府は現在あらゆる手段を講じて民衆の啓発運動を行っている。
２．法律も次々に作られており、違反者には厳しい罰則があること。
３．政府の広報だけに頼らず、自分たち一人一人も注意しよう。
４．家庭で親が見本を示せるように（実際は子供が学校で公衆道徳の授業をう
け、親に教えることも多いらしい）
最後に、外国人に対して。
中国は、先進国の仲間入りをしていない。建国から僅か５５年だ。
しかし、先進国に追いつこうとして、政府と国民は一体になって努力をしてき
た。この短い間の経済発展・成長は賞賛されていいと思う。そして、まだまだ
発展してゆく国だということ、それだけ潜在能力を秘めている。だから長い目
で見守ってほしい。
北京でオリンピックも開かれる。大勢の外国人を暖かく迎えるために、中国人
の伝統であるホスピタリティの心で、新しい北京・中国に改善してゆきたい。

There was an article taken from Los Angels Times “Phase out
Uncivilized Behavior”.
Public spitting, littering and cutting in line are common in China.
There is little awareness of public manners and hygiene.
Some students admit these behaviors exist in the whole country, and
analyze what causes them..
They even suggest what they should do to stamp out those shameful
deeds.
However, there are students who make excuses without admitting the
fact.
I would like everyone to be culturally sensitive and conscious of the
criticism coming from outside.
On the other hand, it is often said that Japan has the culture of sin,
which implies Japanese are over self-conscious always looking around
and check how they are viewed by others.
In my opinion, Chinese are a very proud nation and people are
patriotic.
Japanese are modest and admit their faults and correct them promptly,
however, lacking in self-confidence and national pride.
There are several reasons for this.
China is a developing country and many farmers are so poor that they
cannot afford to get enough education.
Feeding 1.3 billion people, the government should think of solutions
for hunger and starvation first.
Due to the national goal for economic development, ethics or public
morals have been put on a back burner.
Many families fail to teach their children good manners, let alone
show good models.
Everybody seeks material gains and ignores the good tradition of
Chinese ethics.
Chinese government should promote family, social and professional
ethics through education and media propaganda.
Meanwhile strict laws are implemented and those who violate them are
punished severely.
At home, parents themselves should show examples of good manners to
their children.
Lastly, there are some complaints to the foreigners who criticize
Chinese as such.
China has made great achievement for the past 55 years.
This can be praised a lot, because we have been making utmost efforts
to catch up with the advanced countries.
Although our living standard is far less than that of international
one, we have a potential to develop more.
Please give us time.
In 2008, Beijing will host Olympic Games, when many foreigners will
visit the city and see civilized capital and civilized people who
have the traditional custom of hospitality and friendliness.
